In recent years, the family structure has changed, as well as family roles. What types of changes are occuring? Do you think these changes are positive and negative?
Today, people are becoming aware of the fact that a transformation is occurring in family structures, as well as family roles. This trend results in some tremendous changes and personally, I am convinced that this tendency is more negative than positive.
This trend manifests itself in some apparent changes. Firstly, there is a growing popularity of decreased family size. Instead of living in an extended family, people nowadays are likely to enjoy their life with their counterpart or even become single parents. This could deprive from the changes in social outlooks that allow them to relish a boundless life. Secondly, men are no longer the breadwinner in their family. The financial burden now can be shared between husband and wife, and women also have more significant voice in family’s life.
A quite obvious benefit of this trend is that men are not the only ones affording their family’s living standards. It is clear that modern women are capable of gaining high income, therefore they can shoulder their share of financial responsibilities with their husbands. On the other hand, consequences stemming from these changes can outweigh its benefits. At the first place, the relationship between family’s members could loosen. For example, when grandparents live far away, their grandchildren could become insensitive to them, leading to the appearance of generation gap. Otherwise, working women might be distracted from taking care of their families because they have to spend more time on their occupation.
In conclusion, although family might benefit from changes in structure and members’ roles, I still argue that this tendency brings about more drawbacks than advantages.
