It is more important for schoolchildren to learn about local history than world history. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
In the modern world, the fact that whether students should pay more attention to local history rather than world history still remains a controversial question. While I believe that studying local history is important, I still argue that world history should be given equal attention.
It is obvious that thorough understanding about history of local areas paves the way for children’s patriotism and national pride towards their country. For example, in Vietnam, children have been taught about the glorious history of their nation since they were at primary school. They acknowledge that their nations had defeated the strongest army in the world like China or France and succeeded in protecting the country from other external enemies. As a result, children might be proud of their nation and be motivated to put effort in studying.
On the other hand, lessons gained from World history acts as a precious source for students to broaden their knowledge, therefore, allowing them to acquire mutual understanding about other nations and different traditions. Otherwise, it could be beneficial for people’s career if they possess broad knowledge about the world, especially in the era of cultural integration. A strong base of the world’s history would pave the way for the cooperation between distinct nations and help avoid some cultural conflict.
In conclusion, although I am convinced local history plays a crucial role in educating children, I still believe that knowledge about world history should not be underestimated.
